Ten years after the demise of the former first lady, Chief (Mrs.) Stella Obasanjo, her husband, former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday said her memory still remains and will ever remain fresh in his mind. Obasanjo said his family and that of his in-laws have missed the late Stella a decade after she passed on. Obasanjo said this during the 10th memorial service held at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta. Stella Obasanjo died on October 23, 2005 after undergoing a surgery in a Spanish hospital.
The former president in his brief remarks at the church service said he had written a lot about his late wife in his book, “My watch,” stressing that he missed his late wife sorely. “I wrote a little bit about her, there would be an occasion where I will talk about her. I think it will suffice to say that we missed her dearly on both divides;; the Obasanjo family and Abebe family. Her memory will remain fresh in my heart “, Obasanjo said. Speaking on behalf of the Abebe family, Mr. John Abebe ,who related fond memories of the former first lady said she would be missed by all.
Senator Ben Bruce in his tribute described the former first lady as an unusual and global woman.
Bruce said Stella contributed her quota to humanity before her demise.
The presiding Preacher, Pastor Yussuf Obaje in his sermon titled “Keep her memory alive.” Described her as an epitome of womanhood.
Obaje urged the family to continue to keep her legacy alive. Deputy national chairman, south of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Segun Oni said the former first lady was a quintessential woman with a humble background and integrity.
Speaking with newsmen at the reception, Oni explained that his close relationship with the Abebe family gave him the opportunity to understand the late Mrs. Obasanjo whose pedigree was peculiar.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki was represented by his wife, Toyin;; while former governors of Osun and Cross Rivers States, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Donald Duke respectively;; were among the dignitaries at the occasion.
Others included the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunke Amosun, Senator Daisy Danjuma, Funso Kupolokun
and Ms. Evelyn Oputu
