Five Men Died In India Trying To Restore Water Well

The draught which hit the states of Haryana, Gujarat and Bihar in India is been heavily affected.  Much of India is in severe drought which has killed over 300 people.

The recent death is in the state of Haryana where five men died as a result of inhaling poisonous gases that had collected in the well while trying to dig up the well to alleviate the acute shortage of drinking water,  a local official said.
A local officer said  "The well had not been in use for about five to six years and a poisonous gas had formed in its depths," which the five men inhaled and died,  he told the AFP news agency.
India Supreme Court has criticised Haryana and two other states for failing to acknowledge and  declare drought in their regions.

But local deputy police chief Virender Singh denied that they needed drinking water, saying the men had been hoping to use the well for bathing and washing purposes.
Haryana, along with Gujarat and Bihar, was heavily criticised last week by the Supreme Court for failing to declare a drought in their regions, while a significant number of their people were suffering from a lack of water.
